The story behind Julius Pringles

Mr. P also known as Julius Pringles is the mascot of Pringles. Mr. P was designed by Arch Drummond in 1967 and became the face of chips brand Pringles.

Mr. P has undergone numerous redesigns over the years, losing his hair in 2021, but one thing that has remained constant throughout it all is his name. But where does the name Julius come from?

Michael Wiseman and Justin Shillock, two American students who shared a room together in 2006, created the name Julius Pringles. Justin was eating a can of Pringles Sour Cream & Union and Michael was watching a Carolina Panthers (American Footballteam) game when Justin asked Michael what he thought the Pringles mascot was called. At that moment, player Julius Peppers came into the picture, causing Michael to link and reply with “Julius Pringles”. Today, certain Wikipedia pages are closed, but not yet in 2006, which allowed Justin and Michael to add their invented name to the official Pringles Wikipedia page. Because Michael was an active Wikipedia user with plenty of positive edits, his edit wasn’t immediately questioned.

In February 2007, another Wikipedia user removed the name Michael and Justin made up, but Michael and Justin re-added it. Pringles was acquired from Procter & Gamble by Kellogg’s in 2012. Kellogg’s employees assumed that P&G had come up with the name Julius and decided to use the name for their marketing campaigns and Michael and Justin’s invention became a reality.
